For the Common Good / Para el Bien Comun Pt.7

What if the spiritual gifts we've been afraid of are actually meant to build us up, not tear us apart? In this teaching taking us deep into 1 Corinthians 12, Pastor Javier unpacked four of the most misunderstood and controversial gifts: prophecy, discernment of spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. 

We discovered that New Testament prophecy isn't about establishing new doctrine or wielding authority over others—it's the Spirit-empowered ability to speak timely words that strengthen, encourage, comfort, and guide the church in alignment with Scripture. The gift of discernment isn't about labeling people with 'spirits of division' or rebellion, but rather the capacity to evaluate whether a prophetic message truly comes from the Holy Spirit or merely from human emotion. 

When we explore tongues and interpretation, we find that these aren't signs of losing control or proof of superior spirituality, but rather Spirit-given prayers directed toward God that edify the individual privately and the church corporately when interpreted. The unifying thread through all four gifts is this: they exist for the common good, to build up the body of Christ, not to elevate individuals or create spiritual hierarchies. 

We're challenged to move past fear, abuse, and confusion to embrace what Scripture actually teaches—that these gifts operate best within community, under pastoral oversight, tested by Scripture, and always aimed at glorifying Jesus and strengthening His people.

¿Qué pasaría si los dones espirituales que nos han causado temor en realidad fueron dados para edificarnos y no para destruirnos? En esta enseñanza, que nos lleva profundamente a 1 Corintios 12, el Pastor Javier explicó cuatro de los dones más malinterpretados y controvertidos: la profecía, el discernimiento de espíritus, el hablar en lenguas y la interpretación de lenguas.

Descubrimos que la profecía del Nuevo Testamento no se trata de establecer nueva doctrina ni de ejercer autoridad sobre otros, sino de la capacidad dada por el Espíritu para hablar palabras oportunas que fortalezcan, animen, consuelen y guíen a la iglesia en alineación con las Escrituras. El don de discernimiento no consiste en etiquetar a las personas con “espíritus de división” o de rebeldía, sino en la capacidad de evaluar si un mensaje profético proviene verdaderamente del Espíritu Santo o simplemente de la emoción humana.

Cuando exploramos las lenguas y la interpretación, vemos que no son señales de perder el control ni pruebas de espiritualidad superior, sino oraciones inspiradas por el Espíritu y dirigidas a Dios que edifican al individuo en privado y a la iglesia en conjunto cuando son interpretadas. El hilo unificador de estos cuatro dones es este: existen para el bien común, para edificar el cuerpo de Cristo, no para exaltar a individuos ni crear jerarquías espirituales.

Se nos desafía a superar el miedo, el abuso y la confusión para abrazar lo que realmente enseñan las Escrituras: que estos dones funcionan mejor dentro de la comunidad, bajo la supervisión pastoral, probados por la Palabra y siempre con el propósito de glorificar a Jesús y fortalecer a Su pueblo.
